Where to Save + Splurge:
Timeless charm Project
Interior design with intention-
Let’s be honest—if we could, we’d all design our homes with no budget ceiling. Every pillow custom-made, every surface wrapped in marble, every light fixture hand-forged by an artisan in Europe.
But reality (and rising costs of materials, labor, and freight) demands a little more strategy.
At Liz Powell Design, one of our core jobs is helping clients make smart, confident decisions. That means knowing when it’s worth investing in quality—and when it’s better to scale back without losing the integrity of the design. Our philosophy? Spend where it matters most, and save where it won’t be missed.
Here’s how we approach it:
Where We Splurge
These are the pieces and finishes we almost always recommend investing in. They get daily use, anchor the feel of a space, and make a lasting impact both in form and function.
1. Upholstered Furniture
Your sofas, lounge chairs, and dining chairs do more than fill space—they invite people in, create comfort, and define how a room lives. We prioritize quality construction, elevated fabrics, and silhouettes that feel timeless instead of trendy.
2. Cabinetry & Countertops
Especially in kitchens, bathrooms, and custom built-ins, investing in cabinetry and countertops pays off every single day. They need to be hardworking and beautiful. We always prioritize great craftsmanship here—these are pieces you’ll live with (and lean on) for decades.
3. Light Fixtures
Lighting is one of our favorite ways to add drama and personality. A thoughtfully chosen fixture elevates everything around it—even in a simple space. It’s like the perfect piece of jewelry: it finishes the outfit, even when the rest is classic.
4. Custom Pillows, Drapery, & Bedding
We’re firm believers that soft finishes make a room feel layered and complete. A custom pillow, beautifully tailored drapery, or thoughtfully sourced bedding can instantly take a space from good to exceptional.
5. Plumbing Fixtures (in most cases!)
For finishes like brass, investing a little more makes a huge difference in patina, quality, and longevity. But for polished nickel or matte black? You can often save here without compromising the look.
Where We Save
A balanced design isn’t just about the splurges—it’s about knowing when you don’t need to spend big.
1. Side Tables & Accent Pieces
These are great opportunities to mix high and low. You can find beautiful options at all price points, and they don’t typically endure heavy use.
2. Rugs
Yes, we love a hand-knotted rug—but for busy households, kids, or pets, there are so many budget-friendly options that still offer warmth and texture. It’s all about context.
3. Cabinet Hardware
Hardware is easy to upgrade down the line. If your dream knobs aren’t in the budget just yet, go for something simple and clean that still works with your overall palette.
4. Backsplash Tile
Not every backsplash needs to be the focal point. A classic subway tile or minimal stone can look elegant and timeless—and lets other materials shine. If you do want a showstopper moment, we often recommend splurging on the kitchen or primary bath.
Designing with Strategy, Not Just Style
The truth is, beautiful design doesn’t mean spending the most—it means spending with intention. When your investment is aligned with your values, your lifestyle, and your long-term goals, the result is a home that feels elevated, personal, and built to last.
If you’re unsure where to spend and where to scale back, we’d love to help. Whether it’s a one-time virtual consultation or a full-service design project, we’ll guide you through the process with clarity and confidence.
Because at the end of the day, your home should be your favorite place to be.
